Emirates Biotech is setting up the World’s largest Polylactic Acid (PLA) production plant in the United Arab Emirates. The facility will be constructed in two phases, each with an annual capacity of 80,000 tonnes, resulting in a total production capacity of 160,000 tonnes per annum.
Once completed, it will be the largest PLA production facility in the World !

Supporting regional and global efforts to combat plastic pollution and climate change, this volume of bioplastic material is enough to replace approximately 3.2 billion plastic bottles and will reduce CO2 emissions by over 300,000 ton annually.
The facility will also use a plant-based feedstock to produce high-quality PLA bioplastics at scale, positioning the Middle East as a key player in the bioplastics industry.
PLA offers a sustainable alternative to traditional plastics. It is widely used in applications such as packaging, disposable utensils, helping to reduce reliance on single-use plastics across the globe. Emirates Biotech will manage all production steps from a single location, including lactide production, purification and polymerization.
As the global demand for PLA continues to rise, driven by environmental concerns and the shift towards sustainable materials, this facility will position the Middle East as a key player in the bioplastics industry, supporting regional and global efforts to combat plastic pollution.

TÜV Rheinland
Germany, India & Worldwide

TÜV Rheinland is a global leader in independent inspection services. Our experts stand for quality and safety for people, technology and the environment.
TÜV Rheinland offers certification services for bioplastics through testing and analysis, focusing on properties like biodegradability, compostability, and ecotoxicity. They work with standards like EN 13432 to certify products, which can then be eligible for marks like the DIN CERTCO “Seedling” logo. This certification assures consumers and businesses of a product’s environmental claims and compliance with regulations.
Key services :
Biodegradability and compostability testing: TÜV Rheinland tests whether a bioplastic product can break down into natural elements through microbial action under specific composting conditions.
Ecotoxicity testing: This assesses the ecological non-toxicity of the product, ensuring that its decomposition does not harm the environment.
Chemical testing: They conduct chemical analysis to verify the material composition and check for harmful substances.
Consulting and certification: Experts provide support throughout the process, from initial testing to obtaining the right certification marks.
Certification process and benefits
Testing standards: Products are tested against recognized standards, such as EN 13432 for packaging recoverable through composting.
Mark eligibility: After a successful test, products can apply for certifications like the DIN CERTCO “Seedling” Mark, which is an internationally recognized label.
Market advantage: Obtaining certification can boost a company’s brand image and provide a competitive advantage by offering customers a clear decision-making aid based on the product’s verified quality and sustainability.
Regular surveillance: After certification, regular monitoring helps ensure that the product continues to meet the required standards.
