CJ BioMaterials
South Korea, USA & Worldwide

As part of the global CJ Group, Korea & USA and its CJ BIO division, we have the core technology platforms across four continents that are necessary to implement PHA-based solutions at scale.
Established in 1964, CJ CheilJedang has 13 global manufacturing facilities Worldwide.
CJ Biomaterials has expertise in four platforms to achieve these goals: biotechnology, chemical engineering, materials innovation and consumer applications development.
CJ Biomaterials develops meaningful solutions that positively affect our planet and human health and well-being by addressing the challenges posed by fossil fuel-based technologies – including plastic waste. CJ Biomaterials invents and manufactures bio-based chemicals and biopolymers as part of a long-term vision to create a more sustainable future by offering circular solutions that replace many non-recyclable, non-reusable and fossil fuel-based plastics and chemicals.
Investing in the future of our planet and our lives.
At CJ Biomaterials, we invent and manufacture biopolymers and bio-based chemicals. We do it because we have a long-term vision to introduce technologies that will help create a more sustainable future, offering true circular solutions to replace many non-recyclable, non-reusable and fossil fuel-based plastics and chemicals.
We have the technology to address our challenges
How we create and manage plastic waste today affects virtually every facet of our lives. It contributes to greenhouse gases and climate change. Plastic waste affects our quality of life – from global animal health to our use of land and waterways. Plastic waste is also a human health issue as new science points to its adverse effects on our bodies.
CJ Biomaterials is a global leader in the manufacture of PHA (polyhydroxyalkanoates) – both polymers and related chemistries. PHAs are a family of biobased and biodegradable polyesters made by bacterial fermentation. Our brand for our biopolymers is PHACT™. PHACT stands for PHA+ACTION.
Our PHAs replace fossil fuel-based polymers, delivering high-performing biomaterials with multiple end of life solutions.
Decoupling plastics from fossil feedstocks
PHACT biopolymers are plant-based and feature a sustainable manufacturing process. Alone or when blended with other polymers, they dramatically improve environmental characteristics while enhancing physical properties in a broad range of consumer applications. They are certified biodegradable under industrial compost, soil (ambient), and marine environments. They are also TUV-certified home compostable, offering a range of end-of-life solutions.
A World of Applications
No matter what industry you’re coming from or which types of products you’re developing, CJ Biomaterials wants to talk about how we can enhance your sustainability. We have dedicated teams in South Korea and the United States who focus on developing manufacturing solutions using PHA and other polymers. Together, we can create ‘tunable solutions’ that meet your needs in anything from flexible and rigid packaging, serviceware, 3D printing and agricultural films to coatings, personal care, and healthcare.
