How we create and manage plastic waste today affects virtually every facet of our lives. It contributes to greenhouse gases and climate change. CJ Biomaterials is a global leader in the manufacture of PHA (polyhydroxyalkanoates) – both polymers and related chemistries. PHAs are a family of biobased and biodegradable polyesters made by bacterial fermentation. Our brand for our biopolymers is PHACT™. PHACT stands for PHA+ACTION.
Our PHAs replace fossil fuel-based polymers, delivering high-performing biomaterials with multiple end of life solutions.
Decoupling plastics from fossil feedstocks
PHACT biopolymers are plant-based and feature a sustainable manufacturing process. Alone or when blended with other polymers, they dramatically improve environmental characteristics while enhancing physical properties in a broad range of consumer applications. They are certified biodegradable under industrial compost, soil (ambient), and marine environments. They are also TUV-certified home compostable, offering a range of end-of-life solutions.

They work with standards like EN 13432 to certify products, which can then be eligible for marks like the DIN CERTCO “Seedling” logo. This certification assures consumers and businesses of a product’s environmental claims and compliance with regulations.

The Centre of Excellence in Biodegradable Packaging Materials at IIT Madras works to develop and commercialize cost-effective, sustainable alternatives to traditional plastic. This includes creating biodegradable packaging from agricultural waste using fungi (mycelium), developing anti-bacterial food wrapping, and exploring other bioplastics for various uses, such as thermal insulation and medical textiles. The center aims to reduce plastic pollution and promote a circular economy by converting waste into high-value products.
Develop biodegradable packaging: Researchers are creating materials from agricultural and paper waste that can replace plastic foams like EPS and EPE.
Research anti-bacterial wrappers:
The center is developing food wrapping materials that have built-in anti-bacterial properties to reduce food contamination and plastic waste.
Explore other applications: Beyond packaging, the composites can be modified for use as thermal and acoustic insulation, and bioplastics are being explored for medical implants.
Promote a circular economy:
The initiative focuses on turning low-value waste into high-value products, which supports rural development by creating new income streams from agricultural by-products.
Commercialize innovations:
A startup, NatureWrks Technologies, has been launched to scale and commercialize the biodegradable packaging technology, with plans for technology transfer and collaborations with industry partners.
