Balrampur Chini Mills Limited invests into an integrated PLA plant in India.
On February 18th 2024 the board of Balrampur Chini Mills Limited (BCML) informed the Stock Exchanges of India about its foray into Polylactic Acid (PLA) bioplastic business.
BCML is among the largest integrated private sector sugar companies in India, engaged in the primary businesses of Sugar, Bio Ethanol & Green Energy. The Company operates 10 sugar factories across Eastern and Central Uttar Pradesh, 5 distilleries and 10 co-generation units. The sugar factories have an aggregate crushing capacity of 80,000 tons cane crushed per day, distillery and co-generation operations of 1050 KLPD and 278.47 MW respectively.
“BCML will establish a 75,000 t/a “state of the art” sugarcane to PLA facility at one of its current sites in the state of UP”, explains Avantika Saraogi, Executive Director. “PLA is a well-known biobased and compostable biopolymer and we are delighted to realize this strategic opportunity for BCML and further increase the value of our agricultural base”, she explains. “India’s agricultural abundance provides ample biomass for producing valuable bioplastics, benefiting both farming and industry, also allowing to reducefossil-based imports and overall reduce CO2 emissions. This fully supports the effort of the Indian government to make use of the abundant biomass in India and create a cheaper and less polluting alternative to get to a circular economy for India”, Avantika further elaborates.
The board of BCML also announced the Appointment of Mr. Stefan Barot as the President (Chemicals) to drive the PLA project and business. “I am delighted to join BCML”, Stefan states. “PLA is an excellent polymer to replace many of the existing Single Use Plastics (SUP) items, already banned or restricted by the Indian government. To dispose Single Use PLA items together with the biomass waste in Biogas facilities or to chemically recycle PLA, will be a less polluting alternative to get to the targeted circular economy of the Indian government”, he states.

DRDO has developed Biodegradable Packaging Materials technology. This technology is mainly focused on the utilization of biodegradable and compostable polymers such as Polybutylene Adipate co- Terephthalate (PBAT), Poly Lactic Acid (PLA), starch etc for the production of flexible films for applications such as carry bags, pouches, bags etc. A suitable formulation was developed which can be blown into films using extrusion film blowing technique. The physicomechanical properties of the film were carried out using a tensile tester as per to ASTM D 882 and found to have sufficient strength for using in carry bag applications. These films were tested for their biodegradability and found to meet the BIS standard for compostable plastics. A soil burial test was conducted, where thee samples were found to gradually disintegrate and the biodegraded within the stipulated time period. During the process, erosion holes were first observed in the sample followed by breaking down into residual fragments. Later the film completely disappeared, indicating complete biodegradation of the film. Weight loss percentage was also recorded during the test period. The technology is amenable for bulk production with varied thickness as per the end user requirement. Any existing carry bag manufacturer can use this technology to manufacture compostable and environmentally friendly films and carry bags. Considering the widespread usage of single use plastics in various fields, biodegradable and compostable plastics are having the potential to replace existing non degradable plastics. There is a growing demand for biodegradable plastics, which degrade in the environment, to establish a more sustainable society and to solve our environmental and waste management problems.
